The feelings that personal history and personality can bring to situations are powerful. I recently found myself in a situation where I was told something and that caused my thoughts and feelings to spiral. It got to the point that I wondered if this meant someone would be fired in the next few months. That spiral had more to do with PTSD from a stressful experience I had years ago than anything that was being said now. Buddhism has a concept called "right mindfulness". It means keeping an alert, clear, and caring attention on your present experience. The goal is to help discern whether it is present experience that is in your way, or you are.
